I am married for 37 years, the Father of seven children and this August 2020 the Grandparents of 19 grandchildren. Five of our children are married. Three are living abroad, two in Italy and one in Spain. We have two living in the west of Ireland and two still at home. In June 2018 I was ordained Permanent Deacon and have the privilege to minister in a large parish. allowing me to deepen my faith and religion.
The older I become the more I am discovering that I am called to be, God’s work of Art.
“This was to show for all ages to come, through his goodness towards us in Christ Jesus, how extraordinarily rich he is in grace.
Because it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith; not by anything of your own, but by a gift from God, not by anything that you have done, so that nobody can claim the credit.
We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has already designated to make up our way of life.”
Like any great work of art, it takes time to complete to see the full picture.
This helps me to trust that the work God is doing in my life is the best.
Sometimes when different events happen in my life that I don’t understand, like sickness, lack of money, loneliness, the death of someone I love, when I feel God has abandoned me.
I reflect on this reading and consider that if I walked in on a great artist doing a painting I would not understand what the artist was doing.
However if I returned to see the finished picture, I would understand that not one brush stroke was wrong otherwise it would be a different picture.
I believe that one day I will see the complete picture and I will praise God for been his work of art.
As a baptised Christian my community is the Catholic Church which I am very thankful to be part of. This Church empowers me to be a Husband, a Father, A brother and a Neighbour. As a family it has supported and revealed to me over the years how the family is the domestic church. Helping my wife and I pass faith to our children. We have discovered that the greatest gift to give our children is a believe that God is working in their life. We have been allowed during our marriage to expose our children to elements of the Gospel. They have learned to forgive by watching us as parents forgive each other, they have learned to love by seen how as parents we could love each other, especially when it was unreasonable, they learned perseverance by living with our countless mistakes. They learned patience by living in a family. All during this as parents we were supported by the Church and its teachings. Teaching us to live in humility, simplicity and praise. But not forgetting this is God’s work of art and sometimes, a lot of times in our case, the artist makes a big mess.

I don’t know where was made, but I think the feeling is universal.
In times of great upheaval, music can reach the places that words can’t.
May God bless all our front-line workers,
And may they be rewarded for their generosity.
